Tuneful Treasures - Discovering Musical Instruments in American Collections
A Mark Connolly Distinguished Speaker Series Lecture
Thursday, July 25, 2024, 6-7 PM
Join Darcy Kuronen, the former Curator of Musical Instruments at the Museum of Fine Arts, for an engaging and insightful presentation. Drawing on his extensive career working with historical instruments across American collections, including those at Strawbery Banke, Darcy will share captivating anecdotes and expert knowledge.
During the lecture, Kuronen will play Strawbery Banke's c. 1820 Babcock piano (1991.4.), offering a rare and unique performance. With a career spanning from 1986 to 2020 at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Kuronen now volunteers as a curator for the Boston Symphony Orchestra's historical instrument collection.
The Babcock piano, most recently displayed in the Chase House and likely in New Hampshire since its construction, was originally owned by Father Alex Sullivan of Portsmouth and donated to Strawbery Banke by Pat Meyers, former trustee.
