Self-Guided Tours

Step into the past in the historic neighborhood of Strawbery Banke! Unique among outdoor history museums, Strawbery Banke presents the unfolding story of life in a New England city over four centuries of change.

  • Explore up to 9 furnished homes depicting daily life from 1777 – 1955

  • Engage with demonstrators showing traditional crafts and trades which may include woodworking, hearth cooking, textile weaving and/or basket weaving

  • Meet roleplayers from different time periods wearing historically accurate clothing and portraying characters living in the neighborhood through time

  • Visit seven traditional exhibits about several topics including the Abenaki indigenous people, maritime life, historic preservation and the impact of sea level rise on coastal communities

  • Number of Students: No minimum required. Maximum 350 students per day.

FAQs

  • Self-guided means that you can walk around at your own pace and decide which buildings/activities you would like to visit. There are interpreters (guides) in each furnished house to introduce the home, provide information about the family and daily life in the time and answer any questions that you have.

  • A few weeks for small groups and several weeks for larger groups

  • 2 – 4 hours is usually a good amount of time to see most of the site

  • Strawbery Banke Museum is open rain or shine. There is no indoor space to eat so it is advisable to reschedule or plan to eat on the bus in inclement weather.
